July 10-14, 9am - 12am Instructor: Leah Hokanson, Enrollment:4-20 Are you curious about the language of music? Do you want to sing in a choir and want to know the basics of harmony and sightreading? Explore the basic building blocks of harmony, learn the fundamentals of reading, writing and improvising, and bring more music into your life! "I have met many adults over the years who, as youngsters, eagerly trotted off to music lessons until that fateful day (often while still in grade school,) when someone told them "Sorry, honey...You just don't have the talent for this sort of thing". In many cultures, talent ( or so-called 'lack of') is not even part of the equation. Learning a musical language and enjoying the sense of fulfillment it brings is what rings fundamental. Join me in exploring other, musical, fundamentals. By the end of the week you will hold your own as a reader of music, you will experience the joy of being a creator of music and you will understand how this glorious language works."
Leah Hokanson has been a piano instructor to all ages and ability levels for over twenty years. She holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano performance from Whitworth College and Washington State University respectively. She served as a teaching assistant I piano pedagogy at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, while she was a candidate for Doctor of Musical Arts. She has taught both private and group lessons and has a keen sensitivity to the individual needs of students. She believes that knowing the language of music can enrich all our lives, not just those with "talent".
