What is the Crash Course Academy?

Invented in 2006 by Leah Hokanson and Andreas Kahre on Gabriola Island, the Crash Course Academy is a community-based organization with a mandate to help create connections between the knowledgeable and the curious, and anyone with the passion to learn or teach the basics.

The CCA brings together experts in a variety of fields with those looking for an introduction to areas related to life skills, home and garden, the arts, island ecology, and more. Courses are between six and twenty hours in length and are offered for adults, for children, and, as ‘Mini Crash Courses’, for the really impatient.
We typically offer ten to fifteencourses each spring and fall 'semester', as appropriate to the season and to the island's environmental cycles.

Who is teaching?

Crash courses are taught by experienced professionals with a passion for their field, and for sharing it with others.

How much does it cost?

The fee for a Full Crash Courses is $200. Short Crash Courses are $150. Mini Crash Courses are $100, and Micro Courses are $50. Materials, where applicable, are sold separately by the instructor.

Where and how?

We arrange for a safe, friendly environment for each course, in a public space on Gabriola or in the instructors studio/workshop. Each course is designed solely by the instructor and remains their intellectual property.

How to pay?

A registration fee (with the amount depending on the length of the course) is due when you register and reserves your space. Please pay by cheque (made out to the Crash Course Academy) or money order, by Pay-Pal Account online, or directly at the Community Credit Union. (No credit cards, please, at least for now.)

The balance is due and payable directly to the instructor on the first day of class. Withdrawal with refund is possible until the end of the first day of class, or by agreement with the instructor.

What are we missing?

Tell us if there is a Crash Course you would like to take, or if you would like to teach a course yourself, or if you simply have a good idea for a course. We are happy to take your suggestions

JULY 2006: THE CRASH COURSE ACADEMY GRADUATES ITS FIRST STUDENTS

" Tina made it very comfortable for us. We could be ourselves. We had new experiences every day " were some enthusiastic comments by Sarah Jackson, left in this picture, one of three new graduates of Gabriola's 'Crash Course Academy' when she received her diploma from instructor Tina Jones last week for completing a course titled 'Let your Lungs Loose'. Aimed at teens between the ages of 12 and 18, Tina encourages her students to explore their voice and how to use a stage microphone. " You should try it, it's awesome! ", Sarah summed it up.
