Inspired by her father, she worked for many years in Britain before coming to Gabriola. She is a member and former president of the Gabriola Garden Club, works for Wild Rose Garden Centre, and is the owner of Lockwood gardens, a local company specializing in garden design, restauration and maintenance. Instructor: Carol Ramsay This course will help you create a better looking document that presents attractively, demands respect and gets the message across. Perhaps you're designing an ad, a brochure for your B&B, a menu, a project proposal, a poster or even a CD cover, and you don't know where to start. Or maybe you are contemplating self-publishing your poetry, memoirs or a how to book and the task seems overwhelming. This is the course for you. You'll learn what software works best for your project, how to analyze a bad document and make it better, how to decide what information to include, and how to prepare an ad for print (newspaper or local service bureau). Learn how colour and typography affect readability and one's perception of your document overall. This course will cover all the basics with lots of time for project specific questions. Bring your own projects to class and we'll tailor the material to suit your needs! Carol Ramsay currently teaches on-line for Malaspina University-College: Document Design, Illustrator, Portfolio Prep and InDesign, and works for the Gabriola Sounder. She spent 10 years teaching on the ground for British Columbia Institute of Technology, teaching PhotoShop, Scanning and Colour Correction and Illustrator. Instructor: Michael Berry Want to tackle those home repair jobs or interesting woodworking projects, but don't feel like you have the know-how or derring-do? This course will help give you the skills and courage to try your hand at working with power tools to take on those ventures. Become familiar with corded and cordless drills, power miterboxes, jigsaws, circular saws, tablesaws and other power tools, in a safe, friendly atmosphere. Although a history teacher by trade, Michael Berry's life long passion has been woodworking. He has built several houses along with numerous wood projects and enjoys sharing his knowledge about woodworking with others. musicians, and those who simply enjoy experimenting with new ways torefresh their creative energy. Using techniques from a variety of disciplines to stimulate the free flow of imagination and to develop a spontaneous response to the here and now, we’ll explore ways to say yes to our own creative impulses, working with the immediate environment — animal, vegetable, mineral, and spirit. Fill in your own pedigree chart and discover your family. Margaret Mann has always been fascinated with history and has spent over thirty years researching her various family lines. Recently she completed a three year course with the National Institute for Genealogical Studies based in Toronto. Her speciality was the advanced study of English records along with methodology and analysis, along with the study of basic records in Canadian and Irish genealogy. Jacquie Jessup has completed a four year certificate program in genealogy with the National Institute of Genealogical Studies/University of Toronto. A member of the Nanaimo Family History Society, she can also sometimes be found working in the Gabriola or Nanaimo Library. This is an introduction to the basics of batik, meant to inspire the students to continue learning more. Produce a silk scarf, learn to dye one colour and hand-paint colours, learn to apply and remove beeswax resist, and be inspired by other batik artist's creations through viewing batik textiles and paintings done by batik artists worldwide. Rohana produces batik paintings in her Gabriola studio. Instructor: Dr. Rodney Van Dueck Optimal Health: A systemic journey through the body's organs is a lecture style course with attendee participation. You will learn to determine what kind of nutrients are best suited for your body and how to get them from your foods, and supplements if necessary. We will discuss why we need certain nutrients for our body systems, why we may not get enough and what we can do about this through foods or supplementation, including a an explanation of the differences in food grade and nutraceutical grade supplementation. Find out about the difference between maintaining health and treating conditions. Some testing using Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA) will be available to volunteers. This is your chance to ask a professional your personal questions and get straight answers. Bio: Dr. Van Dueck became a DC in 1976. He did 3 years post-graduate training for certification in Neuro-Spinal Bio-Engineering and a 9 month residency research project at Bio-Spinal Research Institute. In 1988 he was certified in Contact Reflex Analysis and Applied Trophology (study of food as medicine in the body) and in 1991 he left the chiropractic association to form P. I. Health Services with his wife Susan. He is certified in Electro Dermal Screening (EAV) from the Institute of Quantum and Molecular Medicine and also holds certification in Biological Terrain Assessment. He continues to study Bio Energetics, the field of biology comprising science, engineering and medicine. Learn about the different aspects of alpacas, including their history, their care, and what it's like to own alpacas from a person who has been in the 'alpaca business' since 2001. Linda Prowse co-owns Crimpy Critters Alpaca Farm with her husband, Jim Duncan. They have been living on Gabriola Island since 2000, and have had their alpaca business since 2001. Instructor: David Elliott Learn the basics of flyfishing, its equipment and techniques for stream, beach and lake fishing. The course will cover basic entymology and an introduction to fly–tying, followed by an introduction to flycasting to be held in the field. David Elliott has been a flyfisher since 1967. He is Past-president of the Totem Flyfishers of BC, Past-director of the BC Federation of Flyfishers, First Executive Director of the Sport Fishing Institute of BC. He was a member of the Sport Fishing Advisory Board from1980 to1982, and has been a Lecturer at Lower Mainland nighschool programs between 1972and1980, as well as a columnist for BC Outdoors Magazine from 1974 until 1980. Instructor: Elizabeth Shefrin Learn about and create–without sewing–beautiful and meaningful fabric projects for social change, in a workshop suitable for experienced quilters and people new to artistic expression, taught by artist and activist Elizabeth Shefrin. For many years, through quilts, banners and other creative expression, women and men have been stitching their way to a better world. From traditional quilts to banners around the Pentagon, from the small determined arpilleras of Chile, to miles of memorial quilts for people who have died of AIDS,activists have used fabric to put their heartfelt beliefs in the public eye. Elizabeth Shefrin is the artist/coordinator of the Middle East Peace Quilt <www.vcn.bc.ca/quilt> which has been touring North America since 1999. She is a fabric artist, a curator and an art writer with a strong interest in community and political art forms. She has offered fabric workshops extensively in the Vancouver area and throughout North America. Her first picture book, Abby s Birds, will be released by Tradewind Books in October.
