Guidelines for Instructors

•  What is a Crash Course?

•  A Crash Course is a general introduction to a subject, offered by an expert, for a general audience without any prerequisite knowledge or experience. The aim is to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts or skills ("Just the basics, please!"), and to cover the material in a short timeframe. Courses are offered in 3 hour increments, as a half day, full days, or longer course. Typically, crash courses last no more than two days.

•  Instructors determine their own schedule, minimum enrolment, and course fee. Typically, crash courses will be most successful with fees (including the $15 registration fee) ranging between $50 and $150, depending on length, material expenses and the experience of the instructor.

•  How does registration work?

•  Students enroll by filling out a CCA registration form, by phone, or on-line.

•  A non-refundable $15.00 course fee, per student and per course, is required to reserve space. Payment can be made by cheque (made out to CCA, Box 318, Gabriola, BC, V0R-1X0), by direct deposit at the Coastal Community Credit Union, or through Pay-Pal on-line.

•  Registration deadline is 12:00 noon, three (3) calendar days prior to the start date of the course. (If more lead time is required, because of room/equipment rental, etc., please contact us.) At this time we will contact you to let you know if minimum enrolment has been met and your course is going ahead, and to provide student names and contact information.

•  Students pay the course fee (minus the $15.00 registration fee) directly to the instructor on the first day of class.

•  If the number of course registrations exceeds maximum enrolment, instructors have the option of offering a second section of their course.

3.   What does The Crash Course Academy provide?

•  Based on the information provided by the instructors, the CCA produces brochures and posters for each 'semester', which are distributed through 'The Gabriola Sounder' and at numerous locations around the island. We also provide extra copies to instructors upon request. Information on brochures and posters include the instructor's name, the course title, a short course description, course fee, course length, dates and times.

•  CCA provides 30 individual course flyers (10 sheets) which include longer course descriptions and instructor bios. These flyers are available on pdf files, which can either be printed by the instructor, or ordered through Eternal Flow Creations (ph. 244-3533).

•  CCA provides a website (www.crashcourseacademy.com), which includes course descriptions, schedules, instructor bios and contact information.

(*please note: Instructors may wish to do their own advertising in addition to the advertising provided by CCA. We ask that the CCA logo, or mention of the CCA be included in all advertising.)

(**please note: CCA's advertising and promotional material attempts to be both accessible and engaging. We welcome any ideas you have regarding format, course titles and content, but reserve the right to make final decisions regarding any printed material used for advertising and promotional purposes.

We will edit for orthography, style and grammar according to MLA guidelines. If substantive editing is required, we will confirm with the instructor, but ONLY if the material is received on deadline and fits the required length.

4.   What about room and/or equipment rental?

•  CCA, upon request, will arrange for space and any equipment loan or rental required by instructors.

•  Instructors are responsible for costs incurred for room or equipment rental.

•  Instructors are responsible for pick-up and return of any equipment borrowed or rented.

•  Instructors are responsible for loss or damage of any equipment.

•  instructors are responsible for clean-up of rented/borrowed space, unless other arrangements have been made.

5.   What about cancellations and waivers?

•  Registrations fees are refundable only if a course is cancelled by either the Instructor or CCA.

•  If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrolment, CCA will contact students and return or credit the registration fee.

•  If an instructor needs to cancel or postpone, he or she is responsible for making necessary calls and arrangements. In such cases, CCA should be notified immediately to facilitate prompt refunds and/or credits.

•  If a student demands a refund after the course has begun, please have them contact CCA. These situations will be addressed collaboratively on a case by case basis.

•  CCA provides liability waivers where necessary. These are designed to protect the legal rights of both the instructor and the Crash Course Academy should an issue of potential liability arise.

6.   What about gift certificates and other goodies?

•  CCA offers $15.00 gift certificates, which can be purchased either by phone, or on the CCA website.

•  CCA supplies pencils free of charge to all instructors. Other CCA items can be purchased either by phone, or on the CCA website.
